Jackaroo 3.5V6 fuel consumption

Savvas

Hi all ... I have had my Monterey 3.5V6 for close to 3 years now. In city running, I never seem to be able to get less than 20L/100km. On the highway though, it drops right down to 11L/100km. I often read that it should be around 18L/100km in city running. Monty as we affectionately call him, never misses a service, gets additional oil changes every 5000km, and has a Finer Filter twin stage air element fitted. Varying tyre pressures seem to make little difference, unless the pressure is lower than normal. The only thing that I can attribute the difference is that fact that I have BFG All-Terrains in the standard 245/70R16 size fitted since the vehicle was new and that these may be heavier than the standard Goodyear Wrangler AP's. Has anyone experienced a difference in fuel consumption going from the standard tyres to same size but heavier A/T type tyres? Can anyone offer any other thoughts?

G'day Savvas, I did a 3 month test late last year [have a V6 3.5] and it averaged out at 14.05l/100km. this was on about 60/40 rural/town running. On the whole I am happy with that but would always accept better if offered :) Overall, not a bad machine, and equal to several Patrols I have owned over the years. Enjoy the bush.

20L/100km seems excessively high, i think you should expect something around the 16L/100km even allowing for a heavy right foot. Changing the type of tyre i.e Wraglers to BFG will not make a noticeable difference.
The only time this would be an issue is if you fit larger tyres, making your speedo read low & therefore meaning your trip meter will indicate less kilometres than you have actually travelled which in turn will give you a worse fuel economy figure.
The fact you record 11L/100km on the highway indicates something else is wrong. I would regard this as an excellent figure for a V6. I do not have an answer for you, but perhaps the finer filter set-up may be restricting air flow a little & causing the fuel mixtures to be upset - just a thought!!
Good luck, let us know how you go.

Jackaroos do have heavier consumption than their main competition (Paj and Prado). It doesn't make any difference if I'm running a paper air filter, one or two stages of the Finer Filter. I don't think there is anything wrong per se and may have everything to with the fact that in the main, it does a lot of short stop/start trips (sorry...forgot to point that out). The car performs great, and absolutely loves being unleashed on the open road. I'm just wondering if anyone is having similar experiences.
On the weekends, with longer trips but still in suburban running, the consumption is much lower. I think I just answered my own question.
PS.... The highway running figure is achieved with 98 octane fuel. I use normal unleaded for city as there is no significant gain with 98.

Thanks for the response all. Some fellows in an Isuzu Trooper forum that I subscribe to in the US suggested I get the ECM retrained and gave me the process to do this. I'll let you know how I go.

I have a '99 petrol manual SE. Fuel consumption over 70 000 km has averaged 12.5km/L. Typical Sydney commuting gives 12 to 13km/L. Lightly laden highway running about 11km/L, towing van at 110km/h around 16km/L. Using 98 octane fuel didn't seem to make any difference in city running. AT tyres will increase fuel consumption slightly as they have a higher rolling resistance than the original HT tyres.

Redjack....In the end it had everything to do with the way my wife drives. Mon-Fri when she has it is 20-22l/100kms. Sat-Sun when I have it, still doing city commutes, I get around 15-16l/100kms.
