Sorry to tell you what you don't want to hear mate but we sell these at my work and in the 10 years i have been there all the ones we have sold have this smell. I have a full length and a 3/4 length coat. It is just a characteristic of the oilskin fabric.

The smell will linger as long as the oilskin has oil in it, after which it won't be any good. I once splashed diesel on mine. After I got rid of the diesel smell, I was really glad to have my oilskin smell back!!

John, sounds like the time i spilt tuna oil on my old one. The ex wouldn't walk within 20 meteres of me lol. She threw it out. R.M.Williams sell a good reproofer. Also worth saying that when stroring a driza bone coat you should turn it inside out and roll it up. This prolongs the waterproofing.

Hi Steve

Don't know. The local copper was sorting it out, so I'll ask him in the morning.

Hi Brewman

I'll have to get the right stuff from RM then. I cleaned mine with their great saddle dressing. Looks a treat, but water now goes straight through it!! Not what I planned at all. Reproofing would be the way to go.

Oh no.......saddle dressing is great for work boots and just about anything leather that is in need of either nourishment or protection. If you use saddle dressing on anything put the tin in a sink of warm water to soften it up a bit and use your fingers to rub it in. Lots better than using a cloth. The reproofer is called "oilskin re-prooofer". I know the rm shops stock it, but just about any saddlery shop or country stockist should be able to get it in for you.

I've never understood the attraction to those heavy, smelly things myself.

Give me a GoreTex jacket, that IS waterproof, breathes, rolls up small, and doesn't stink anyday!!
