I had an 88 lwb petrol Pajero some time ago Phillip. It was quite thirsty - 15l/100 on the highway and 17 around town. A swb should be less thirsty and so should a diesel. Think carefully before getting a diesel though - I test drove one and couldn't believe how slow it was! The petrol wasn't very quick but the diesel was so slow! I think that they were a very small engine in 1988 - maybe 2.2l but not sure. The petrol was 2.6l and also underpowered - mind you I happily drove it for over 300,000km. I hope you enjoy whatever you end up with.
