Update on Jackaroo 3.5V6 fuel consumption

Well I just finished my first tankful of petrol after having the ECM reset on my Monterey 3.5V6. Without any type of driving change, fuel consumption around town dropped from 22L/100km to 17L/100km. Needless to say....."not happy, servicing dealer!" about the fact that they couldn't do anything about it, and I could. If anyone is interested, the process to retrain the Isuzu 3.5V6 ECM is 1/ Fill fuel tank right up, 2/ Remove ECM fuse for a few hours (preferably overnight), 3/ Replace fuse, make sure aircon is off, 5/ Start engine, and let the idle settle down to 750RPM, 5/ Drive it around using various throttle/speed conditions for about an hour or so. So my around town range has gone from just under 400km to 500km. The engine also cruises around quieter than before. This process was given to me by the Isuzu SUVs owners forum in the US.

Very interested in your 'fix' for your fuel consumption woes. Do you think this same fix would be suitable for the 3.2 V6 (as in rodeo)?? Andf if so -where id that ECM fuse located.

I wouldn't know if it applies to the 3.2, but it can be tried. In the Monterey and Jackaroo, it is located in the engine compartment fuse box. The lid to the compartment shows which one it is. In my case it was a a square, pink, 30 amp fuse.

The ECM is the engine control module, basically the brains that runs the engines electronics. The fuse is simply the electrical fuse for it. The idea is that if you pull the fuse, the power is cutoff and any settings stored in an erasable memory will be erased. Therefore the system has had a reset. A bit like rebooting a PC.

It basically sets it back to the original settings. Most ECMs (including Isuzu's by the looks of things) have an ability to adjust some settings according to varying conditions. This is what the reset does.

But surely you can't be happy with 17l/100 either? I find your recount similar to the placebo effect in medicine. I don't mean any offence but can't believe that an ECM could become so badly set and then be reset so easily!!! The fact that you actually believe the engine is now quieter just topped it off!! In answer to another contributor - there's no hope for a petrol Disco!!!

With my trip to the Blue Mountains this last weekend it averaged 13L/100km with mixed traffic conditions which was expected anyway. I know I didn't buy a Barina and will never get car-like economy out of it. But 22L/100km was way out there!

Savvas, 13l/100 in mixed traffic conditions is just fine! You should be quite happy with that - far batter than 17 and 22!! If you've brought it from 22 to 13 you're certainly onto something good!

I guess i would remove the ECM fuse AND the ECM BACKUP fuse?? Makes sense to me.
