On big trips (2/3 weeks) to the remote areas, we take all the food from 'home'.

Vacuum packed meat/fish/chicken - the butcher will do this and meat is good for weeks if kept cool in the frig.
Fruit and veges individually wrapped in paper towel and newspaper. Still had good Cos lettuce after 2 weeks on the CSR.
Powdered milk.
Cook your own bread.

Seems that most of those outback stores a have a frozen food truck delivery every fortnight - there is usually plenty of meat to choose from at (EG - Innamincka - 500km from anywhere - plenty of tucker, baked bread daily and lots of camping gear!!). As with Colin's plan, we take our tucker from home (for about a week's munching) then top up at the next main centre - we see the 'outpost' towns as backup, but not the planned supply ! IF you need to use them though, phone prior - there could have been a hiccup in supply !

Hello there - yes the supply truck comes once per fortnight - locals shop mostly from Bush Order section at woolworths Port Augusta - but always have frozen meat and chicken pieces in freezer at General Store.
Good news is that the Birdsville Bakery will open on 14 August 2004 . yahoo. yum yum.

We do as Colin does food from home, enough for the time we are away plus some, (eg) away for 2 weeks take 3 weeks worth.

No frozen food at Mt Dare as at 26 -6-04 But check out the web sight www.mtdare.com.au (they do haave cold beer and nice hot pies and pasties!!!!)

All these places have or could have meat etc but do not rely on it. As Ruth said they only get the supply truck once a fortnight and if you are there the day before it arrives then you may miss out. When we were there last month I think Ruth said there were 300 people in the CP that night. Now if they all restocked I think there would be little chance. As it was the stocks in the freezer were getting low.
I think it is very important to support the businesses in these more remote locations for things like food and petrol but it would pay to phone ahead. The night we were there the bigger servo ran out of diesel as the truck was behind schedule.

As I said it is important to support these people even though it is probably a higher price than we would normally pay because without theses people we would be in trouble.

I cracked up when I heard people driving $60K plus vehicles complaining that at $1.45 per litre it was going to cost $50. Imagine the cost of setting up a fuel drop or taking all your fuel with you if there were no servo's or shops.
