Hi Stuart
I have a 94 (NJ, same as 95) 2.8 turbo diesel Paj and love it. Have only had it 6 months but have had no trouble with it and have towed a camper trailer up north and been offroad several times.
I agree with the suggestion to check out the Paj club
forum, I regularly visit it. From what I've learnt they are a great motor for their age. Main thing I reckon to look for is regular oil changes/
servicing. I'm not sure what your mother's after but I think the diesels only came out in a manual back then. I have heard a few people with 5th gear problems if major towing or use at low speeds. If you're looking at one with an oil pressure guage, don't automatically ignore it if looks a bit sus. Guages and senders are a common problem and I've never heard of a diesel Paj that actually had bad oil pressure. Mine was just a dirty connection to sender.
Fuel economy is good, around
Perth I've got 10-11 L/100km in the last four tanks. Towing campervan (1 ton) used 12-15 depending on speed. I'm happy with power too (although significantly less than new DiD). Pulled the camper with ease and offroad keeps up with 80 series LC diesel every time.
Personally, I reckon they're a great value for money 4wd for people who use it predominantly on road and like to get off road every now and then. The reason I picked mine over a newer model Jack or Paj was that most diesel mechanics would be confident working on them.
Cheers, Grant
