I need a new exaust as its cracked. I have read the archives on extractors. Should I just go standard (1/2 for now - $270) (2nd 1/2 later) or go with full system $900 extractors. Just about to leave on 9 month trip round oz with camper + tinny.

Depends on how long you plan to keep the vehicle as to what you do. Short term - replace the cracked part - long term do the lot.

However, $900 buy a lot of fuel during 9 months on the road. You can't do the minimum fix and think about the upgrade after you return home?

I think you are being ripped off on the price though, I'd be doing a ring around for more prices to compare.

G'day Rox

I also think you are being jabbed. I have been quoted $650. for extractors and new muffler (to replace the monster that is currently on my 2000 model Troopy) on a 1 HZ includes fitting. Not sure where you are but this quote was from west sydney, not the cheapest place to live.

regards jeff

Rox
Seems a trifle excessive
Why not get your local muffler shop to cut out the cracked part and just replace that bit. Doesn't take much to bend up a bit of tube and weld in place.
This is assuming that the exhaust is cracked and not the manifold
Then replace or whatever when you return

I would just replace the section that is cracked. First check the rest to see if its sound. No good cracking again elsewhere while on your trip.

Apart from the muffler the exhaust on a 1HZ will be good for a few more years yet, the muffler gets a lot of soot build up which can cause a partrial blockage. If you want to replace anything else stick a better muffler on.

Depends on how much $ you have to blow.
Is your manifold stuffed? if not why replace it?

$900 sounds expensive to me. Is that stainless or unobtainium?

Ring around other places.

If you got the money, go a turbo and complete system...

The manifold is fine, The pipe is cracked just below flexi joint.
Don't want to spend $ on Turbo. "Is that stainless or unobtainium? " don't know it was blue in colour.

Gday
Extracters would be better value than a new manifold....i would buy the extracters and make sure you get a flex joint in the system, or you will be replacing mufflers, and welding the extracters up regularly....go for a good quality flex not the cheapest u can get.
Now to the muffler, the big round one is restrictive, but keeps things quiet, so if you replace just it, you will notice the sound increase with the kw's.
Might be worth just doing the front if u want to keep it quiet....as i said the other day, i would be putting a hair dryer on (with a new rear part of the manifold that it comes with) and exhaust....u will see more in the time u have away, because you will get to each destination faster....

I replaced my entire system with Pacemaker extractors, and a high-flow 2 1/2 exhaust from Genie Exhausts in Myaree, Perth. It cost $880 fitted, and the improvement in power was immediately noticable. On the trip back to Karratha the fuel economy was 10.5L per 100km, although this was taking it failry easy without any load in the car. The system isnt any louder than standard, but it does have a noticable growl when the revs get up a bit. I was a bit dissapointed with Genie as the exhaust knocks in a couple of places when starting or turning the car off, and I noticed they used the old bolts and clamps, which I would think for that price should have been replaced with new ones.... I would suggest to go to Robson Brothers 4X4 as I have found them to be brilliant. They dont do exhausts, but would point you in the right direction.
Hope this helps

Based on some experience, I'd simply have the exhaust repaired - your likely to do a few unscheduled 'mods' on rocks anyway!

Also consider that opening up the whole exhaust will be benifical immediately (but dont expect to turn it into a rocket ship). If you later add a turbo some of the work is already completed. This even makes a noticeable difference on the less powerful 2H engine!

Since diesels are low rev engines, the extractor primary tubes would need to be long to be a real benifiet. Many are too short unless you are running 4000rpm+.

Save the money you would spend on extractors & put it towards a turbo if you need more go than the exhaust system alone will provide.

Either way those Commodore SS are still going to be a bit quicker :-)
