You can buy UHF handhelds that are just as small as mobile phones and you can also handsfree kits for them.

But you won't get any decent range. Mobile phone's rely on the towers being in high locations to give them range. UHFs have to be able to send a signal direct to another UHF radio at ground level, so they need more power (except when using a repeater).

Thankyou for your replies,just to clarify i was only trying to replace the bulky hand held mic and lead with a miniature mic and no visible lead to make installation neater and safer to use while travelling,keep both hands on the wheel etc.

Hi Tim.I have a UHF Uniden UH089 which I bought in a kit from Electric Bug in Adelaide with a hands free microphone/ear piece that sits over your ear (Uniden's "VOX Headset"). It's not entirely comfortable but works quite well. I saw them advertised recently in (I think) a DickSmith catalog for around $60-$90. Seems a little pricey to me for what it is, but there you have it. You have the choice of using it totally hands free (ie voice actuated) or by pressing a transmit button on the cord when you want to talk. Cheers, Mike.
