Chris, Oodnadatta to Birdsville (a little further than you plan) Base model diesel cruiser 98litres. Nearly double for a petrol Patrol, less for a diesel Disco.

Chris, attached is some info I recieved from a friend wo has just got back from the Simpson and the fuel usage of the group he lead.

For those that are interested on a recent, trip to the Simpson Onnandatta to Birdsville via Dalhousie Rig Road, Lone Gum, WAA, Knolls Track,French Line, K1, QAA 710 km - over 4 nights in very dry conditions and at a very relax pace the following results:

80 series diesel (fully loaded 4 people, roof rack 50 litres on roof and full recovery gear and spares )119 litres
80 series petrol/gas (2 people, roof rack) 190 litres
100 series petrol (4 people, roof rack) approx. 190 litres
78 series troopie diesal (1 person, empty!!) 107 litres
75 series troopie diesal (fully loaded, 4 people, roof rack 40 litres on roof full recovery gear and spares ) 115 litres
Forerunner Turbo diesel (2 people) 80 litres
Nissan 3 lt turbo diesel (4 people, lightly loaded) 115 litres

The 80's and 100 diesels have similiar consumption figures.

Hope this helps.

Chris : did same trip last year 80 series wagon diesel, tyres 18 psi (split rims) loaded with Aussie Traveller roof top tent and all the water food etc and did B'ville to New Crown 620kms on 100 litres of diesel. (No fuel at Mt Dare at that time) and no trouble over the dunes in low range.. which is about all you will use anyway as it is a slow trip

Chris, I don't think you will get fuel at Mt Dare. When we came through in April, they were running all their stocks down in preparation to hand the place over to the Aborigines. Simon

Sorry, this isn't quite right. A young and enthusiastic couple called David and Melissa took over then - next delivery of diesel will be 28th August 2002 (Melissa rang me today to tell me). There is plenty of unleaded though. Also - September/October is rather late to be travelling with a family in the Simpson - can be very uncomfortable is not used to strong winds and heat. I realise about the school holidays - but May June July are the best months. Hope this helps.
