I wouldn't mind betting you have a blown head gasket-cracked head or a warped head that is allowing water into the cylinder.Are you losing any water.

Sounds like you have more than 1 problem. Your glow plugs might be OK but what about the timer? Could be not suppling correct volts or for right amount of time. Power loss could be anything, ring SMS on 02 9714 2500 as they have a diagnostic engineer who can advise you for free.

White smoke is your clue - seems to be a fuel delivery problem, running lean for some reason momentarily check filters especially the tiny banjo filter in fuel pump also injectors "may" need a service. - not much can go wrong really apart from this. Also timing problem may cause this but too erratic (still stranger things............)

I own a MQ diesel and is doing the same thing lucky for me i work with diesel machanics they told me that the injectors aren't operating properly in the cold mornings (it doesn't happen in the summer) there spray patern is uneven and the droplets are to big, and with a cold diesel engine they don't burn properly wich causes the white smoke and running ruff until it all clears and the injectors work better. the glow plugs are another thing that will cause this and more than likely if the smoke clears up and goes black when under load or changing through the gears. So don't forget that white smoke is unburn diesel fuel and blue smoke is oil burning i hope all this makes sense and helps

also there is a lot more to be told about this problem what i have said is rather quick and simple.

you dont mention kms or service history. any inspection should include things such compression testing & cylinder leakage. white smoke is associated with incomplete fuel combustion and can be caused by poor compressiion , incorrect fuel timing or maybe a primary fuel pressure problem in the injection pump. ps i dont think any STANDARD pajero ever did very well in the P-D
