G'day Uppy,
Generally it is not a good idea to use 5th gear when towing in any vehicle.
When in 4th gear the drive is transferred straight through the gearbox and
not through any gears.
Selecting fifth gear can overload bearings and/or gears.
I would only use fifth gear in extended "over-run" situations.
I understand the earlier Pajeros were prone to this problem.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Moz

I agree with Steve i have a gq 4.2 td and a new TDI4.2 have tandem offroader allways tow in 5th gear no probs ,GU from 99 to 2001 had 5th gear failures due to 5th gear shaft Spline having less surface contact area, that prob has been addressed now( road ranger truck gearboxes have
5 + overdrive gears and you use em all the time)
why have a5th gear if you cant use it
