Savvas

Hi all, Has anyone tried the Uniden UH090 AM/UHF CB? I'd like to get some feedback on how they perform.

The UHF function works well and they are a good compact unit with lots of features and better value-for-money than GME. A recent 4WD Monthly article (this magazine conducts far more rigorous, scientific and critical appraisals of vehicles and equipment than the other wishy washy 4WD mags that I used to subscribe to) showed that the Uniden has similar range/clarity to the GME. The only thing I would recommend is using an auxillary speaker to ensure adequate volume when the engine is doing 5000rpm as it propels the vehicle up a sand dune...

the 4WD monthly report didn't point out that Uniden's need annual servicing to maintain their rated output. I've owned many UHF's and now own 3 GME's one of which is more than 5 years old and still puts out 5 watts. I've seen brand new Unidens out reaching 2.8 watts on a power meter. If you want quality, buy Australian.

I have to disagree about Uniden being better value for money than GME. There is a huge difference between being slightly cheaper and being better value.

In my experience Uniden UHF's (not 27 MHz) need servicing every year or two, for them to maintain their rated power output (that's around $30 each time).

I've never had a problem with my GME's and even the 5 year old one is still pushing a full 5 watts when tested on a power meter. And if you do have a problem then you can rely on the 2 year warranty, coz your dealing with an Australian company.

A local radio tech who sells both brands recommends Unidens, coz he knows he'll keep getting work (can we spell unethical?). The other tech and the 3 other shops that sell UHF stuff will only deal in GME or Icom.

Why AM/UHF? I live in Central Australia I do not know of anyone that still uses AM. For my money I would put it all in to a top quilty UHF only. I use Philips brand.

Hi Phil .... I live in Sydney and some people I know still use AM. I have an AM already, which I haven't installed in my Jackaroo since taking it out of my previous car and I do want to make the move to UHF. However, I have a use for both and I don't want to install two radios. So I'm curious as to what this unit is like. If I had no use for AM, then I would agree with you. A top quality UHF would be the go for sure.

I have had an Amateur Radio Licence for approx 12 years and unless you intend getting one too then it is of no use to you to have an AM radio. I agree with the other guy who replied, put all your money into a dedicated UHF radio preferably one with scanning. Scanning will help you find an active channel. In my humble opinion stick to the Uniden brand, they are good quality rigs,

Hi Rob,

Just wondering how brand new radios that only transmit at less than 3 Watts, when the box claims 5 Watts is good quality?
