100 series landcruiser clutch shudder

I have had a clutch shudder in my 100 series diesel landcruiser since it has done around 10,000km. After many excuses from my Toyota dealer, they replaced the clutch, presure plate & throw out bearing at 20,000km. They where going to replace the fly wheel as well, but decided they would machine it instead. It hasn't fixed the problem & the dealer is now admitting that it is a fault & they don't have a solution the the problem. Has anyone experienced the same problem, or have a solution.

Moose, This is a very common problem with 80 and 100 series diesel cruisers, generally when you drive off from cold. Everyone complains about it. I don't know of a good solution. A new clutch only seems to fix the problem for a short time, say 10-20,000 kms.

Richard, thanks for your reply. I find it hard to accept that we should have to put up with a manufacturer fault especially when they admit to it. I am going to continue to demand satisfaction from Toyota until they do something. Maybe if enough of us complain it may prompt them to act.

moose, we have a 100 series also, std 99 model, with 75oookm on the clock, this is a problem with them our toyota service manager said this is standard and there is nothing that can be done, i am glad i didnt buy from new.

Michelle, thanks for your reply. Even second hand it's a big investment & 75000km isn't a lot of k's. You would think there was something they can do, after all according to them, they are the most qualified to work on the Landcruiser.

Hi, I replied to an earlier question and beleive that it may assist you. What you might be feeling is called 'drive line backlash' due to the constant four wheel drive set up in 80/100 Series Cruisers. Try fitting a part time kit from Marks Adaptors or 4wd Systems. I am saving up to get a kit myself (around $600 mark plus fitting). It is also supposed to help with fuel economy etc and might be a bit cheaper than relying on the dealer to find and fix the problem. Best of luck and hope this helps.

After nearly 20 years in the Army and driving 110 Land Rovers on and off since 1989 I have experienced the same problem in them as in my Cruiser and when speaking to our mechs they metioned that it 'might be a problem with the constant 4wd'; however as it was never a major problem then one worried about it. Furthermore when we use ours in the field we are towing loads heavier than would be expected of civilian vehicles and in situations worse than civilian vehicles would normally expect and at times you do feel a shudder etc from underneath which could be anything I agree but as yet no-one is worried about it, but it does happen on Land Rovers.

Karl, I tend to agree with Tonyy. According to Toyota themselves, they admit it is a clutch fault but they don’t know how to fix the problem.

moose, our is a part time 4 x4 explain that, they all do it ive been told, we have a fuel pump problems and toyota just farm the work out, they are ok for a camery or corolla but any thing bigger they farm out. thats what the fellow at toyota told me

Moose. I have a base model 80 series which has (as I call it, 'selective 4wd') and its clutch has shudered since new. Toyota in their usual arrogance, will not help you. I recently went on a Daiken clutch course and they claim they have developed a clutch kit which will solve the problem. See any large clutch and brake company for ther product. As for the Datsuns, yes they may have a smoother clutch, but they have 2 piece laminated flywheels which have been known to seperate. Good luck. Derek.

I've had 4 replaced under warranty as have many of my mates. Keep at them. Apparently the latest clutch kit is the best fix so far. Mate had his done a little while ago and he reckons it feels better than all the rest. Mine is ok.

It is a widespread fault and different to the 80 series shudder.

Moose, latest I heard was that the whole clutch kit and flywheel were to be replaced. Machining the original flywheel covers it up for 10-15,000km, but hey presto, it returns.
Best I could suggest would be to check with a dealer on what the latest repair is from Toyota, and if it listed as being sucessful.
Try to get a hold of a person at the dealer who knows what they are doing. Some do, some pretend.

We are onto our second 100 series and the first one had three clutches, with the final modification being to replace the flywheel and return to original equipment. This was after some sort of "improved" plate was installed earlier. The result was fine for 60,000 ks. The current vehicle after 40,000 ks has a clutch shudder when cold just like the other and will be presented to tyhe dealer shortly for rectification, I hope.
