Was at my local ARB store today looking at the Nitrocharger shocks for my GQ. (I want some softly valved shocks for a better ride, with some extra travel). I've looked at a lot of shocks lately and something about the OME's looked familiar. They are identical in appearance to the Monroe gas Magnum 4 x4 shocks which are sold at most automotive outlets for a lot less than the OME Nitrocharger. I mentioned this to the ARB salesman and he said yes, they are made in the same Australian Monroe factory but 'in a different part of the factory' The shocks feel about the same (to compress by hand) as the Monroes, so its got me wondering, is there any difference? Monroe talk about the 35mm piston, chrome steel rod, 1.6mm walls etc in their literature, just like OME. The OME's are apparently available in two firmness ratings (comfort and firm). Both the Monroes and OME's have a two year warranty, EXCEPT the OME 'L' series shock which is appx 65mm longer than standard has no warranty from ARB whatsoever as they are regarded as a 'competiion shock'. Monroe also make an 'L' series shock for my GQ which does have the same two year warranty as the standard length shock.
So, are the OME's worth the extra money or am I just as well off with the Monroes?

Monroes make a substantial amount of the local aftermarket shocks anyway (not just OME), so go with the manufacturer, rather than a "value added (???)" reseller and save yorself the money.

I think the "other area" the salesman was refering to was where they put the stickers on........

Just shop around get the better deal. You are probably just as well off with the Monroes.

Believe it or not, I managed to get 4 x OME shocks and 2 x OME coils fitted to my Jackaroo for less than Pedders, EFS or Tough Dog would do. I wasn't expecting that to be the case, but it was and I went with the OME's.

The place I got the OME's is an ARB reseller, but not an ARB franchise, and they didn't seem to charge according to the ARB price guide either.

If you're in Sydney, have a chat to Mike at 4WD Service Centre at Taren Point.

OME are one of the cheaper end shocks on the market, with the best marketing.

Having said that, if you expect the performance the price dictates, then you wont be surprised or dissapointed, but if you believe the marketing...........

A shock absorber manufacuter needs a new labeling machine to slap labels on it's shocks and I saw the samples that the machine had to apply the lable to. The were coincidentally Old Man Emu, Monroe, and Pedders. They all come out of the same factory. But you will probably find that valving spec for each brand may be different.

despite/because of the replies from some (conspiracy) theorists who haven't actually had any personal experience with what they are talking about, I will offer the following. Even if Monroe's/OME shocks are identical (and I seriously doubt it; they are at least different in the valving department and ARB can show you photos of them modifying shocks off the main assembly line), the main advantage of buying OME is the personalised and knowledgable service you get from ARB. Unlike many suspension packages where people grab some shocks from one manufacturer and some springs from another, and just hope they will work well together, OME shocks/springs have been matched and work extremely well in handling/comfort/articulation compromise. ARB also have a range of springs available for each vehicle so you can set up quite accurately to your individual needs. They are also happy to swap springs at no charge if you find them not to your liking within a reasonable period - many suspension places will not do this. OME shocks are also extremely durable - my Disco was hitting suspension stops on most dunes through Simpson due to sh*gged rear springs (vehicle was not overloaded; springs were just very soft). This sort of abuse would have blown many shocks but the less than new OMEs were fine...

"has no warranty from ARB whatsoever as they are regarded as a 'competiion shock'."
I love it when manufactuers and retailers say sht like that. They HAVE to give you 12 months by law. Don't let them suck you in. Just like cheap clearence shops offering 3 months warranty and crap, too bad bucko, I'll have your price and my 12 months thanks very much.

I believe that Munroe shocks are all made to factory standard lenght. All OME shocks are designed to be as long as physically possible to suit factory bump stops. The L series of Munroe would be of similar lenght to a standard OME shock.

The racing series of shocks from OME are for competition use on require the vehicle to have modified bump stops and generally brake lines. Modifications required will vary from vehicle to vehicle. No warranty as if you fit them to a standard vehicle and then bottom the shocks out hard then damage to vehicle and shocks will result.

Munroe only makes 4x4 shocks for themselves and OME in Australia.
No other brand of 4x4 shock is made by Munro in Australia. Pedders 4x4 shock range is fully imported.
