Hi,
Ive recently purchased a 1984 HJ60 landcruiser with a 2H diesel. Im really happy with it but it has an annoying problem with cold starting that I hope someone could help me with.
It only happens first thing in the morning. Normal starting during the day is fine.
I need to glow twice but I think thats a separate issue.

Cold Start.
I glow twice, turn engine over and it jumps to life quickly. After about 3 seconds, I hear the click of a relay and the engine cuts out. I restart (glowing only once) and its fine.
Recenlty I had a new starter relay installed but Im pretty sure thats on a separate circuit (it had this problem before anyway).
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Rgds

Check to see if your oil presure comes up quickly (if no or low oil pressure edigt motor shuts of fuel supply stoping motor, its connected to fuel pump by a rod about 50 mil long) Maurie

Thanks Maurie Ill check that in the morning. From memory, it comes up pretty quick but Ill measure it against a warmer start.
Can that shutoff be adjusted to be a little more forgiving?
Cheers.

yep if there is no oil pressure in about 5 sec (I think )the shut off to the edic motor will be activated mine does it all the time during a cold start. Try giving it a bit of revs (dont thrash it ) after starting to get the pressure up before the cut off is activated. If it annoys you to much you could disconect the low oil pressure cut off (dont know how) as it is for people that cant read a gauge and the 1hz seems to cope without it

Neil, the 2h motor that was in my '89 troopie had a double glow plug timer. When the dash light goes out the first timer cuts out but the second timer keeps the glowplugs going a little longer.
I wired in another dash light that told me when the second timer timed out. The motor would then start every time.
Never had the Edic cut out on me due lack of oil pressure. This feature makes a wonderful theft deterrend, BTW. Wire in a secret switch that opens the oil pressure wire . Anybody nicking the car will find it runs for 5 second and then stops. Start it again, it runs for 5 seconds and stops.
It has to be a very determined thief to put up with that for long, lol.
Even fooled my mechanic a while with it, was fun to watch him trying to figure it out.

another trick is to turn it over without glowing as the cranking will get oil pressure up before it starts (not recomended)

This is absolutely the low oil pressure cut out switch. Nothing else. The audible "click" will be coming out of the area around the glove box. Just give it a few more revs when starting and it should not happen. Or just start it twice.

Dont worry about it as it happens with almost all of them. Does not mean that the engine is bad or anytghing costly is wrong. Do an oil change, pull out the oil pressure sender switch and give it a clean and it should stop straight away.

What grade oil is used in the motor?? Mine did that in winter only, with 15w40 oil.
a touch of accelerator, say to 1000rpm for a second after start, would also fix the problem.

Start it Twice. Don't Disconect as it is to stop the engine if it starts in reverse.
Don't rev it untill it has oil preasure or the shaft the rockers are on will get choped out!

Neil i assume you have changed your oil filter ,as an old oil filter clogged with sludge will slow flow and drop oil preasure causing edic motor to shut fuel off
