Tony,
Go to your nearest newsagent or camping store and purchase a copy of,
Priceless camping in the nth of west australia and a copy of Priceless camping in the NT. by Jan Holland and i assure you they are very informative books with good descriptions and even GPS locations. The price is ok as well about $25. They may even sell them through this site.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

Gday Tony
I purchased both these books through the Exploroz shop and found them invaluable both in the Territory and Northern WA. We found that the descriptions were very accuate and the mud maps let up plane travel and stops easily.

Get yourself a copy of Priceless Campsites & Rest Areas in the North of Western Australia by Jan HOLLAND for camping out.
A copy of Cooks Tours "AMAZING NORTH", free from tourist bureau. Will give you
reasonable info on the towns and localities on the way and the local attractions etc.
Talk to others travellers as you go as areas do change, by way of closure etc from the time of publication.
Theres heaps of spots from the secluded to the highway stopover so it really depends on what your looking for on any given day, eg time of the day and how long your looking to stop for.
Have a good one.

Cheers
Wal

Tony,

Just did this road (via coast) relocating a Motorhome to Darwin. I assume you mean by stopover, places to rest and replenish rather than explore. If that's the case, Geraldton, Port Headland, Broome, Kununurra and Katherine are the places. I didn't go into Derby or Wyndham but can't comment. Timber Creek was also relatively clean and safe. Fuel was significantly more expensive at the "mid-point" roadhouses.

Tony,
How long do you have? Here are a few suggestions if you have the time, they are all worth a look as part of your trip
Kalbarri - good for a stop over for a couple of days
Coral Bay and Ningaloo - You can stay in the Caravan Park at Coral Bay with thousands of others, or continue along the coast track to Ningaloo Station and camp along the beach somewhere. South Lefroy Bay is beautiful - and only $2.50 per person per night.
Karratha, Dampier and Pt Samson - The Pt Samson Caravan park is great, or you can camp along the beach at 40Mile (just south of Karratha) or Cleaverville (just past Karratha)
Inland in-between Karratha and Pt Headland is Karijini National Park which is worth a couple of days exploring the gorges. Some of these are absolutley amazing and well worth the trip alone.
From Pt hedland to Broome there are a number of caravan parks and camping areas - I stayed at Barn Hill station a few weeks back for a stopover while heading North, and found it great - you could easily spend a few days there relaxing on the beach.
North of here there is Cape Levique (Beach Huts just above the High water mark are $50 per night) these have a sand floor palm frond roof and walls and a bbq and are well worth the $$
All of the places I have mentioned I would highly recommend to anyone heading that way. I stopped short of telling you places on the Gibb River Road, or I will be here all day as there are so many!!
Hope this helps - I had better get back to work......
Drew
PS - Dont do it in the middle of Summer......
