windy west

Hi All,
we are heading off early Jan to do the round Oz thing for 12mths, and intend heading west from Melbourne. I am a keen fisherman and have a small tinnie and intend spending most of our time exploring the coast from Esperence up to Exmouth. Many articles I have read suggest Jan Feb March are very windy on the west coast and make boating ,camping and fishing pretty miserable during these times, so maybe I should head east instead. Please let me know your thoughts and experiences on this matter.

Hi Nella, The weather around Esperence is a day by day thing but they do have a wind farm on the coast there so that may give some indication, lovely spot with the bays to the east being very impressive.Once you start heading up the west coast the weather is great at that time of year and the area from Albany through to Margaret River is very popular at this time of year- great time for camping. When you head past Geraldton the south winds can be a pain and most would visit north of Kalbarri in May through to October. The area that you are talking about is vast and the different locations have different weather patterns. I am not a "boatie" so as far as tides and currents are concerned I have no experience.
Come over to the west you will love it.

Regards

Mark

Boeing has pretty well hit it on the head, but the southerlys start down around freo. However they generally blow from around midday onwards. Strongest from november to feb/march and between Kalbarri and Ningaloo. Summer is best south of perth/geraldton, after about april, north of gero/kalbarri is very good, cool nites, days near perfect the further up you go. Winter cold fronts rarely reach past sharks bay, so you can join every other tourist and most of the grey army up there at that time!! Remember also though that these breezes only blow on the coast and maybe to 50k's inland and also they serve to keep the temps down a bit. Here in summer you know if the forecast temp is under about 33, it will be a southerly, and the hottest time of the day when windy is around lunchtime. Its a huge place so enjoy it. It spans in latitude (north/south) roughly similar to melbourne up to Cairns and more with about a zillionth of the people!! enjoy your travels!!

We went left about on our 1 year trip, leaving in Feb and had the best fishing on the SA coast from Kangaroo Is to the start of the cliffs. It took till the middle of may to get to Perth with great fishing around Israelite Bay.

In SA, Fowlers Bay and Cattus Beach south of Penong was the pick of fishing spots, Coffin Bay was also good at times.

Up the west coastis ok if you can put a boat in around Ningaloo Reef.
