Tyres for Discovery

Submitted: Tuesday, Nov 02, 2004 at 05:11

Robert G

I'm in need of new tyres for my 97 Disco.

Currently happliy on Michelin XPC 235/70 R16 (2 sets, 80,000 klm on each set)

Any comments please regarding the newer Michelin Synchrome? These are relatively much cheaper (around $240 ea)

Urban 85% Off road 15%

any help would be appreciated.

Robert,
I reckon the XPC is one of the best tyres going round (so to speak), and unless you increase your off road fraction I'd stick with 'em. The synchrone looks very much a bitumen only job.

Actually, they're a bit expensive for me ($340 ea), hence the question about the cheaper Michelin Synchrome.

I'm told today that Toyo OPAT are pretty good. Perhaps not all that smart in "sloppy mud', but otherwise okay, an particulalry long wearing - for about $190 each - more in line with my budget at the moment.

Any comments about them??

The mich's XPC are a great tyre, I am on my 3rd discovery and wouldnt have anything else if all my travels are on road. I am changing to the goodyear wrangler ATR's as they have a 50/50 split between road an off road use. I am told by Beaurepairs thatthey have been designed for the Aussie conditions, they are around $230 each.
