I can't Believe it. Anyone got photos?

Submitted: Wednesday, Nov 03, 2004 at 21:29

Ozman

I heard that a parked 4by was 'cut in half' when vandals pulled the elec winch cable out, dragged it over the roof and connected it to the rear tow bar, they then shorted the electric winch motor with a paper clip.
When the owners returned to the carpark the 4by was totally destroyed!!!
Is this true and does anyone have photos?

Cheers

I have heard the stories of that being done, not to the extent of being cut in half tho. I have an extra isolator switch under the bonnet, (im sure others do too) so if you want to power the winch you have to switch that first....better safe than sorry

I have heard about it and urban myth or not. Do as Gajm has done and fit an isolator. Best to play to play it safe.

I've been hearing stories about this for many years.. Never seen it myself, nor have I met anyone who has....
Urban myth perhaps??? (though I guess it would pay to take appropriate precautions!)

I think "cut in half" is a hyperpole but certainly I believe some damage has been done by a few mongrels. Like others mine doesn't have power supplied to it until I need it and being unfused it gives me peace of mind that it wont short while driving around.

I usually find the one thats the biggest with the name I want, thats usually the complete version of the movie.
OR the one thats closest with the most people that have it listed, you will see on the right where it says 9 users or similar, that will download much faster.

KAzaa lite is the best one, Kazaa is full of spyware. Get yourself some spyware remover and run it.

Also MUST have antivirus running too while downloading.

You can usually burn them to SVCD, on a normal CD, or if you have a DVD Burner you can use something like NERO EXPRESS 2 to convert them to DVD Format.

Both SVCD and VCD will work in most DVD players

www.dvdhelp.com is a good place to check.

Like the above, the story's been around you a few years. Older winches are no doubt prone. Newer ones with the military spec socket connector appear to have addressed this issue.

I saw somewhere that the newer five pin socket cannot be used without the winch controller . Any electricians out there know for sure as i dont want to waste money on a cut out switch if i dont need too .

I can't think of any reason why it couldn't be shorted out with a paper clip or similar (some smart ass might shoot me down in flames now..) even with a 5 pin outlet I would still very much doubt that you would need to bridge out anymore then 2 terminals.

Wayne (NSW) posted:

Glenno,
The way that I isloate the winch is to find the little black cable that comes out of the control box. This is the earth cable for the soleniods and if it is run into the cabin then through a switch and then to earth the only way to use the winch is to be in the cabin and flick the switch. This saves putting a heavy duty switch on the main winch cables. The other way is to mount the control box under thhe bonnet, this means that the vehicle has to be opened to use the winch. This little black cable is only on late model Warn winches, but it would not be hard to do the same on other control boxes just have to run a cable to earth out the soleniods. With an PTO or hydraulic winch the motor has to be running before the winch can work. Some might say that some PTO winches have a crank handel and can be used with out the motor running, but who carries a crank handel for a PTO winch with them.

Only use the winch two or so times a year, so I disconnect the +ve lead to the winch from the battery post. Reconnects in about 10 seconds with a butterfly nut. Simple and cheap, and I know it can cope with the amps.
