Michelle, We did the GCR from Ayers Rock to
Laverton with a Pajero and a van (it wasn't off road - therefore not really high clearance) and it was easy. VERY corrugated and in
places sandy but did not use 4WD at all. There is no unleaded till you get to Tjukuyirla (sp?) road house so you need to carry. We carried an additional 80 litres to the full tank in the car and had plenty. It is best to empty the cans as you can as the locals seek out unleaded for sniffing. Its very scenic and varied country side. We did it late July -
road conditions change dramatically in summer due to rains and its not advisable to do it then. We phoned the various road houses on the way before we left NT to find out the conditions and spoke to people in caravan parks who had come that way recently. We travelled at around 80 - 100kms 75% of the time. Its a dusty bumpy trip but beats going on the main roads for time and scenery! Have fun!
