Michelle, We did the GCR from Ayers Rock to Laverton with a Pajero and a van (it wasn't off road - therefore not really high clearance) and it was easy. VERY corrugated and in places sandy but did not use 4WD at all. There is no unleaded till you get to Tjukuyirla (sp?) road house so you need to carry. We carried an additional 80 litres to the full tank in the car and had plenty. It is best to empty the cans as you can as the locals seek out unleaded for sniffing. Its very scenic and varied country side. We did it late July - road conditions change dramatically in summer due to rains and its not advisable to do it then. We phoned the various road houses on the way before we left NT to find out the conditions and spoke to people in caravan parks who had come that way recently. We travelled at around 80 - 100kms 75% of the time. Its a dusty bumpy trip but beats going on the main roads for time and scenery! Have fun!

Michelle. Was in a group that crossed from west to east in July. Group included one off road trailer pulled by 100 series and one off road van pulled by troopy. No problems. Don't know if yours is an "off roader"or not but, if not, would suggest caution as there are a lots of corrugations in patches. Otherwise it is an interesting trip with some great scenery.

Ourselves in a Ford Courier dual cab ute, and another vehicle Hilux travelled the great central road from Alice Springs. Wonderful trip, a little bit sandy just before and after Docker River, and as for corrigations, all up about 15 minutes worth along the whole stretch of road. The majority of the road is about five lanes wide and travel speed was averaging 80/90km. Beautiful scenery, saw many camels, cockatoos and burnt out cars on roadside!!!! We ran across 2wd cars towing caravans who made it on the road! You will have no probs!!!
