Tyres for My MAV

Submitted: Wednesday, Sep 11, 2002 at 00:00

Jason

I have just purchased an '88 Ford Maverick (GQ Patrol), It needs new rubber all round soon and was wondering how big the tyres can be before I put the body lift into it. Currently it has 31x10.5's. If 33x10.5's are possible that would be great. Any one had any experience with this?

Jason, you will probably find 265/75/16's (or 32x11.5 R15) are the biggest you can go without scrubbing out too much when flexing. Troy

Jason.
Go smaller not bigger, narrow tyres out perform wide tyres in almost every way. Dont be fooled by the tyre salesmen, look at what the profestionals use.

Well eric I suppose you should ask jason what hes using his 2.5 tonne maverick for and where he drives it daily. Cause while I agree with you in many instances I think the maverick/Patrol needs a bigger footprint than many lighter vehicles especially in sandy areas but also in general use there are many pros and cons. A lot also depends on the tyre he buys and obviously jason is starting to do his homework so hopefully by asking he'll get a good idea of somewhere to begin.

agree 32X11.50rx15s the limit without mods 33s will scrub inside wheel arches Depennding on the donk the 32" will give you a nice highway gear ratio and better economy as well

I own a GQ Patrol (leaf sprung - Diesel- Ute) & have been told by one of the local tyre shops that it is possible to run 33's on my truck. I'm also looking for some new rubber & am finding it difficult to decide cause each shop you go to they tell you something different. I currently have 235/85/16 on split rims.
