Which tyre?

Grazza

Hi all,

Am in the market for a set of new tyres (size 285/75R16) and have decided on either the Goodyear Wrangler MTR or the GFBoodridge MTR. Given that I can get them for the same price, what would be the better choice, or are they much of a muchness?

PS Their main function would be that of an all purpose tyre (having said that I have decided on the MTR over the AT).

BF Goodrich make a decent tyre too.

i have heard (and i do say HEARD) that the Goodyears wear very quickly, but are a brilliant tyre while they last.

I would swear by BFG tyres. I am on my third set across two vehicles and find them superior to all others. I currently have a set of All Terrains on my GU Patrol and a set of mud terrains mounted on rims which I put on the Patrol when I head bush. All sets have given me in excess of 70,000km. Good value

Gazza, have you had a look at the Bridgestone Muddies, not nearly as fashionable as others seem to be, but I have gotten fantastic performance out of mine, (I have no idea if they are available in your size, guess that they would be.)

Don't discount them just because they don't get talked about much.

dave , have you considered coopers? i 1st put a set on when they were unheard of as all the tyre experts i knew said they were the bees nees and have since gone for a second set 285/75/16 on my GU3 and find them to be exceptional (but not the cheapist) and they come with a wear warranty too! - regards tim

Check your warranty conditions carefully. I believe tyres need to be rotated every 10k by dealer. Could be other conditions but I still believe them to be a great tyre.

Hi Grazza, my husband & I have just returned from a 60,000km round-Oz trip done over 14 months. We used BFG Muddies & couldn't fault them. Good value for money in our book. People often asked us if they were noisy but we didn't find that at all.

I have looked at those tyres but have been given an excellent price on the Goodyears ($260 each) so I think they will be the ones for me. How did the big trip go...any advice? My partner and I have dreamed of doing it for years but finally have set a date and started saving in earnest...we leave June 2004 for about 12 months (give or take a good Barra season)!

We ended up having to buy another muddie in Broome because we sliced through the sidewall of one on a track in the Pilbara (it was a very rough track & a bit of bad luck was with us that day!). I could give you a thousand tips on your epic trip but there's only one that really matters - don't miss things around Australia just because someone told you it wasn't worth it. Check things out for yourself. So many times we were told the wrong information or that such-n-such a place wasn't worth the wear & tear on the car to get there, only to check it out for ourselves & find the most beautiful campsites, scenery & 4wd tracks. You will love it! I'm so jealous! I want to go again!!!!!

I dont think you will get better all round value than the new BFG M/T KM series - new footprint and compounnd and side tread heaaps better than the old bfg M/T and anything else Ive used look good so far for 70-80,000klms.

Another Perth resident here. I've been quoted $210 per tyre for the Bridgestone Dueler AT's, (Not sure if MT's cost anymore.) They did us proud on a recent 25 000km trip round Oz that included Nhulunbuy out in Gove, Arnhem land and Cape York. Well worth a look.

On the subject of tyres, there's another thread in the forum here about Prado rims on Cruisers which demonstrates my confusion about what I can do.
I've just come back from Bob Jane who advised me that the Prado's I have on might not be legal on a Series 80, and that I could have gone 275/70 R16 with standard Cruiser rims (damn GoodYear who sold me the Prado rims.
He also went on to say that I coudn't go to 285/75 without using a 15" rim.
is that right?!
Thanks for tips about the best tyres (if I can get them on); I still hear Coopers are the best though (just hearsay)
