Eric, I tried some Plus 50 inserts. They only cost about $ 30, so worth a try. However, I am not sure that I can really see an improvement.
Next try(when I have the $'s): Lightforce 170's. They run the same globe as the huge 240's, but have a smaller parabolic dish to throw the light with. The Lightforce bloke says he drives with these more than the 240's - remember he has at least 2 x all sizes on his vehicle. The 170's will fit into the bull bar space, and are cheaper also.The 240's need a special mounting bracket to get them to sit behind the bar = more work. The 240's tend to throw the light down the road rather than around the vehicle perimiter/down the road as do the smaller 170's, according to the Light force bloke. I reckon the "side" light is pretty important for spotting 'roos etc. And yes, I do believe him. Who else knows that product better?
I have thought about an upgraded loom - reports on chat rooms say these are a must. I also drive slower at night to suit the light source. Cheers. Rick

Eric, As a start get H/duty wiring looms from either ARB or Piranha, bit dear but worth the loot. High wattage globes will stuff up your dipper switch circuit with standard wiring too. Don't know if the change to 130 watt h/beam is worth the extra heat etc. 100 watters throw lot of light with the good loom. You may get away without buying inserts too, with 100 w. Inserts are dear, but makes like Hella and IPF, might make a big improvement. I've only had experience with Toyota 80 & 75/79's, with inserts and/or wiring looms. Along with good quality driving lights, makes for almost relaxing, night cruising...Catch you later...Bob.

eric, i worked at arb and been a 4wd mech fpr the past 20 yrs. put in the arb loom upgrade kit and run 90/130 IPF globes. its worth the dollars
and you'll notice a huge improvement over standard. done it to heaps of them and not a compliant yet. the reason youre standard loom melts is that its pulling too much wattage through. the arb modular loom bypassess this problem

Just keep in mind that the boys in blue may give you a defect notice if your upgraded bulbs don't meet the ADR's. I've heard of people with the 90 watt low beam bulbs being fined.

Hi Eric. I speak of 2 vehicle here. My first was FJ45 troopie. Replaced headlights with Hella and globes to 100/130 on a tailor made wiring lume made by an auto electrician. These lights litterally melted the road. almost to the point that they were too bright making it difficult to see anything in the darkness to the side. Second troopie HZJ 75 series.
ARB sports lume, instant improvement even with standard glodes. Replaced the headlights lenses with IPF, not as good as Hella, too late, I paid the money. I upgraded again to 100/130 watt globes, not as good lighting as with the Hella but still good. Kept blowing globes as they overheated. Now I am back to standard globes again. I have yet to try the "New" cool burning globes. Summing up. Replace you wiring lume first.
