In four weeks you will have plenty of time for stopovers etc with the following route:

Melb Mildura Burra (good pub to stay at on first night- $30 a head)
Burra Marree Oodnadatta Track. Across to Stuiart Hwy at Marla, turn left at border along Victory Downs Rd (good bush camping along here). Rt at Mulga Park Rd past Mt Connor to Curtin Springs.

Uluru, Olgas (maybe camp at resort for a night - not my scene but has hot showers). Head toward Kings Canyon, some bush camping after turn off to north. Camping avail at Resort if needed.

Leave King's Canyon via Mereenie Loop Rd to West MacDonnels region. Lots of places to stay and see in the West Macs. Make way slowly to Alice Springs. Spend a few days here doing day trips to outlying spots (East Macs etc), and seeing Art Galleries etc

Leave AS to south either via Old Andado track, or along the old Ghan rail line, ending up at Mt Dare. Mt Dare to Birdsville needs 4 nights to start to appreciate the desert. After Birdsville there are several options depending on time remaining.

Have a great trip.

Ian : Bob has got it right !! have done all of this(ex Sydney) although not all together on one trip but no problem.. A. S. through Old Andado to Mt Dare would be my prefered route... 100 litres for diesel Mt Dare to B ville, and the rest is dependant on how hard you push ahead but reckon on 12 litres for 100kms ( Landcruiser) ...prices are all on this site !! A great trip ahead, take it easy and soak it all in !!

How about Melbourne, Nhill, Big Desert NP, Sunset NP, Mildura, Wentworth, Lake Victoria, Chowgilla Reserve, Dangalli CR, Yunta, Flinders Ranges NP, Gammon Ranges NP, Arkaroola, Strezlecki Track, Innaminka, Cordillo Downs, Birdsville, Big Red, Mt Dare, Old Andado,
Alice Springs...10 days. Explore Alice Springs areas 10 days.......Follow reverse of Bob's route back to Melbourne...10 days. Plenty of bush camping. Rough guess about 6000km.....720 litres average $1.10l = $792. $50 day tucker and incidentals......$1500. Take 3 grand with you. Cheap and wonderful holiday and you don't have to push it. Have fun.
