You can get a cheap pair from most large retailers, Dick Smith, Coles, Woolies and many others. These would do the job ads long as you stayed within 3k of each other.

They have various types to choose from.
Be aware that the cheapies have less range and "eat" AA batteries when transmitting.
For a little extra you can get rechargeable batteries and higher output. These types usually sit in their own recharge cradle which plugs into the cigarette lighter outlet.
Too easy for the better half who doesent have to decide which way to instal the batteries!!
Yep. they cost more........But you can always sell 'em when your trip is over.

Buy the highest send/recieve wattage units that you can afford - it will give you more range and better reception. Rechargeable batts are good. Having a hand held set in the car without being plugged intop an external aerial will also limit you as the metal vehicle provides some shielding.

You could always borrow them and post them back when you're done.

Otherwise any cheap units will do so long as you stay close to each other. Although you can get out of range very quickly however I assume you have mobile phones in that case. As in if one of you breaks down and the other drives on unknowingly.

The quality and power of the small units varies considerably as does the price.

I've got a pair of Uniden 041s which i use for work, so the kids can keep in touch at camp etc, cost about $140 for the pair with charger, battery pack etc.. They are 1W and are good for 3-4 kms depending on conditions. The battery lasts for ages without a recharge and my g/f used them to talk to me on the in car UHF when we went away in two cars recently. She was quite impressed with them, great for organising toilet/coffee stops etc.

UNIDEN 041'S are bullet proof , for under $100 buck's a pair you can't go past them. Use them in mining game no probs at all. GME have some cheaper not bad.
