If you are not into vehicle maintenance, you should take it to a caravan maintenance specialist and have the brakes checked for proper function. If they are cable over-ride, they are not complicated. If they are hydraulic there are a few more issues. Either way, its not only legal that you have good brakes - you'll be very, very thankful that they help you stop in time if you strike some drama. One last thought - if you hit someone, their insurer might seek to clean you out if they could establish the van's brakes to be dodgy... peace of mind is worth quite a few dollars to me :-).

Ta. They are the basic cable over ride type. So maybe I can check them out and if in doubt seek assistance. I agree brakes are very important!
I just wasnt sure if I had to have electric legally.

Clasic cable overide brakes are not rocket science and can be adjusted and serviced by most with a basic mechanical knowledge. Make sure that they are clean and work easily when the vehicle starts to brake.
Also the cables must not be too tight as the spring action when depressed moves the axle slightly rearward .
