Insurance cover for Off-Road

When checking with insurance companies, I get open-ended replies as to what Im REALLY covered for when off-road. When I started 4WDriving a few years back, the insurer told me that I would be covered each time I told them. (This also cost extra premium). When I changed to another insurer, they told me Im covered if I stay on gazetted roads. Even this, I find confusing, because you can buy detailed geotech maps, and even dirt tracks are named. So are these gazetted if they are named?? What is everyone elses experience? Do you just take a chance?

One of the advantages of joining a 4x4 Club is that you have access to insurance that covers you for and in any situation and location. Checkout your local 4x4 club/association.

Yeh, I got that too - but what does legally mean? When I asked they said gazetted roads. But what is a gazetted road? And they told me over the phone, nothing in writing. Dig deep, and youll find they have an out, and youre not covered. i think this is an area not properly dealt with.

Before I went for a trip to Central Australian last year I contacted AAMI my insurer and asked what the limitations were on my insurance? They said everything except water crossings. I would suggest that if you are really concerned you should join a 4wd club or the 4wd association and take out the insurance provided only to these clubs.

Hi John. The best cover you can get is through the Aust. National 4wd Council insurance scheme which has been set up especially for 4wd club members. Cover is available for vehicles, camping equipment and trailers and,Home & contents;2wd vehicles;boat & caravans. You MUST belong to a 4wd club to be eligible. The cover is organised through tcis.com.au/4wd.html 1800 633 745 Also a gazetted road is generally one that is maintained by a government roads department either dirt or sealed. The insurance policy through the clubs is generally very competitive but definitely gives you the full cover that you really need. The policy was written by 4wd people and then they went looking for companies that could supply the cover specified in the policy.

TCIS is the way to go, if you get out there and use an HF radio you could join Australian National 4WD Radio Network and get the insurance as a member,not to mention the sced facilities and assistance they offer.
