one piece troopy wheel

Hi all,
Thinking of changing my 96 troopy splits (6 studs) to one piece. Wonder if the landcruiser 80 wheels will fit ? I like to stay with 16" and use 235x85x16 tyres.

I've been trying to fit 235x85x16 tyre to my 5.5" splitz to get a wider footprint on the road (bitumin) and hopefully better ride and grip. A number of tyre places are reluctant to fit because the rim is too narrow and the 235s are tubeless tyres. Any problem ?

80series and 90series (Prado) will have the wrong offset (too much backspacing) for your '96 troopie. 60series and rigid front hilux had the correct backspacing but don't have tubeless 16inch wheels. I think you'll find most Nissan, Jackaroo, Mitsubishi wheels etc also have wrong offset.

I think your only option is to get aftermarket 16x7 wheels - ROH trac2 or Speedy Desert rat which can be obtained with the correct offset.

Theres heaps of 15inch wheels out tehre to suit your troopie, but like you, I'd prefer to go with the stronger 235/85R16 tyres.

I"ve seen a couple of Lux's with 80 series wheels, they have "0" offset the same as hilux, but I could be wrong. I have a set ready to fit my Lux after I set up suspension.

I think you'll find those Hiluxes have the Torsion Bar front end - not the rigid front end (front leaf springs) as I mentioned. The offset for these two hiluxes is different.

The torsion bar front end Hiluxes can take the 80series and 90series (Prado) wheels. The 16x7 Prado wheels fit up very well.

stick with the splitties and chuck a set of 14ply rags on them and say bye bye to flats. I have an 80 with 235x85x16 10 ply Toyos and I am considering going this way as I currantly cant drive it roun d the block without wrecking a tyre or getting several flats

I would agree with this. In terms of ride you are maybe better ensuring that you suspension is as good as it can be before you change the wheels. The other option if you want to go tubless would be to try and get a set of 60 series chrome rims.

Not totally 100% sure but I think the offset in the 80 series may vary from the early ones e.g.1990/91 to later ones e.g. 1996/97. I am pretty sure I have seen a 40 series withe the later steel 5 slot gxl rims on it.
