I've been researching tyres for the last year and the MT/R was one that I had considered earlier but subsequently ruled out. My investigations revealed that owners had commented that they were noisey on road but worked very well in the mud and rocks, which made the noise factor "livable". They are reputed to have very strong shoulder and sidewall strength which is designed to keep the sidewall upright to avoid penetrations. This could mean they would also be firm riding too. You can't have it both ways. List price was $300 and I would not pay that for them, however a bulk tyre dealer quoted me $268ea, they are pretty keen to get them out on to the market, eager to break the stranglehold that BFG and Cooper have on the market. It is too early to comment on the wear factor.

Theres nothign but 10/10 reports on Patrol list, and Melbourne list on them... Excellent all rounder more along the lines of the BFG MT than AT.

Coopers ST would be more along the line of the bfg AT.

Allyn I will agree with you about the BFG tyres ,I bought some At ko back in April this year done about 20000 and are cut to bits and almost worn out soft as pup.Never again but we dont want to start on about BFGs again do we?

I concur that the current crop of BFG's are not up to scratch anymore. The KO series are just not giving the service that the superceeded one's used too. Friends of mine agree. This partly explains the increasing swing to Coopers, I think. Have a look at the Kelly Springfield range. Again, they are sourced from USA, are 8ply rating in 265/75x16, load range D. Very, very tough in the sidewalls and are $50 per tyre cheaper than Coopers. They offer a road orientated boot called the AWR, an in between mud and highway called the MSR and also a dedicated mud terrain pattern. The MSR's have a full 14.2mm deep tread block, which is deeper than Coopers, so they should wear very well. So far, I can't complain they are going well.

Thank you all and thanks for the link Truckster.
I've had a good look at the Wrangler MT/R today and have ordered a set of 285/75R16's. The tread pattern looks exactly like what I am after and the sidewall looks as tough as nails when not on the rim. Time will tell I suppose and perhaps the Cooper's would have been the best option but I was concerned with availability in my part of the world.
I've been a BF Goodrich man all my driving life and it saddens me that they couldn't live up to my expectations after such a huge initial outlay. They'll make great trailer tyres though !
