Hi Neville:
This is regards to the
permits ........
This came from the latest Toyota Landcruiser Club Newsletter (of which I am a member).
"Two
permits are required to access the corner. The first is available online from the WA Department of Indigenous Affairs (http://www.dia.wa.gov.au/), whilst the second must be obtained via the Ngaanyatjarra Council, PO Box 644,
Alice Springs, NT 0871.
The Ngaanyatjarra Council will forward your application to the Irrunytju Community at Wingellina, and if approved, will issue you with the access permit to Wingellina and instructions on the actions you must take once you reach the outskirts of the Community. You normally pay for your permit at the Wingellina Office. The cost (in 2004) was $100 per vehicle plus $20 per person.
For your money you will receive an excort from Wingellina out to the corner, and at a house very near the corner, our escort also picked up the aboriginal traditional owner of the area, a lovely old gentleman by the name of Lance Eddy. Once out at the corner posts our escort, who happened to be the Chairperson of the Community, together with the traditional owner, provided interesting information about the area, its aboriginal occupation, and the advent of the two corner posts. The Wingellina Community are intending to use some of the permit monies to build an interpretive shelter out near the corner posts to provide more informaqtion to visitors."
Your permit will provide you with a three day window (which you can nominate) within which your visit must be undertaken. Make sure you avoid Saturdays and Sundays as the Wingellina Office might not be open.
You will also need an appropriate permit from the Central Land Council to drive though the Docker River area, which can be downloaded from http://www.clc.org.au.
Truckster mentions that it is now $800 per vehicle, so things may have gone up (considerably) since this member's trip in mid 2004, or he may have combined the cost of all the
permits. I don't have any further information on this point.
Hope this is of use.
Jack
