Jeremy, I can only recommend that you decide exactly what you want from the car. The occasional easy fire trail, shallow creek crossings, and a few plays in the sand - the Xtrail will be fine. However, once you start doing these things you might find that you want to drive in more areas inaccessible to the Xtrail, in which case you should look at at 4x4 with more ground clearance and low range.
A lot of the beach problems above seem to be high pressure in the
tyres. Drop the pressure and the Xtrail is not too bad on the beach, I went on an organised tour at
Stockton Beach and did all the dunes and hills the Prados and Patrols did without difficulty, but of course this will depend on the conditions of the day.
