Frank..I would like to say yes but alas..NO! There doesnt always have to be soot present on a crack ie lots of it! I replaced a Feroza manifold (huge cracking culprit) and there was nothing but a hairline black line...yet it whislted like a banshee!
I have also had the unfortunate experience of chasing a tapping noise on a VS commodore with sportes exh and extractors..Ended up being the slightest leak across a tiny portion of the exhaust gasket where the headers bolted up. No soot or anything evident!
Have yoiu tried having someone move around the vehicle..ie front seat then middle then back to help in pinpointing the origin of the noise..it might help with diagnosis if you knew its engine, not y pipe, cat or muffler.
Goodluck mate, sorry cant be more help!
Matt.
