Hi guys,
What am I looking at for a cheap, portable GPS? Used to have a Garmin, but it went when I sold my boat. Any brand recommendations are good.
Don't need it often, but handy when looking for fishing spots and stuff up north.
cheers,
Scotty

Scotty,
Have been using a Garmin GPS III for years now (don't think they are made any longer) both for in vehicle and in the boat. Used it to run to reefs off NQ a few years back - some 45km out. Run it off the cig plug attachment while in the car which, in theory, leaves plenty of juice in the AA's for when out of the car. Can only give raps - I've had no probs at all.

G'day Scotty.

I have a Garmine Etrex, which is an entry level GPS, a little more basic than the Garmine Etrex Legend.

Paid about $260 all up on Ebay which is the retail price locally. However in this price I got a computer download lead and a cigarete adaptor worth about $60.

This unit will do all I want and more. Whilst I have played at uploading a waypoint list and downloading the map of where I've been, over the topo map, all I really need is to record a few waypoints in case I want to go back the way I came and may need to find the pass through the sand dunes or the like. I also use it in conjunction with a paper map to identify just where I am on the map and so, on the ground.

An entry level unit will do much more than this if required. It even tells me what time the sun will set, how long till I reach my destination at the current speed and what direction I'm going. Pretty good huh?

Regards,
Laurie.

Hi Scotty,

I have a Garmin Etrex Legend which I bought new for under $300. Does all I want, has a basic map installed and works fine with Ozexplorer. I use it mainly for recording our track. I haven't tried uploadingwaypoints yet, but have used it for backtracking.

As Laurie said, it gives you lot's of usefull information as well.

Thye colour version would be nice, but much more expensive.

Cheers,
Greg

We too have the Magellan Gold bought in the Traveller Pack cost $750 and have seen them advertised for around that price lately. Found it a great unit in our last trip.
Told when purchasing if you wanted one for the maps the Magellan was the best but it you were hooking up to a lappy etc go for a Garmin.
