K & N in a GU is it worth it?

Thinking of putting in a K&N air filter in the 4.2td Gu.

Any good ??????????????

Will read any fors or agins.

Not sure about the TD, but i have one in the v6 jack and i have found it excellent. I found them to be expensive in Australia, so i ordered it from the states for about half the price.

This was asked earlier. I put one in my VL race car. The improvements were amazing for a simple item. Not sure how it would work on a 4b though. On the race car it was same as running the VL without an air cleaner but with the protection of collecting all the dust from others loosing control and bringing dust onto the tracks. The thing breathed so easliy and made the engine very responsive to throttle control..no lag at all.

Got extractors and new pipe & muffler put on my 2.8 diesel today and next item I will fit is a snorkle to let it breath a bit better. The guy who fitted the pipes suggested I fit a K & N filter. So just as I do with everything for the 4X now, I checked our forum. After reading the info contained in the forum I don't think I will fit a K&N. Anyway, have a look at the forum archives and see what you think. There is a link in one of the replies with results of independant tests.

Would recommend.
The normal paper filter for a turbo GU had a red core which has a bigger flow rate than for an non turbo.
The filter for the turbo clogs up quite quickly on normal use let alone off road use. The K & N can be serviced easily for any use especially for off road use.
THe K & N seems to have better flow rate than the normal paper one.

I put a k&n in my cruiser and found it to be good. Not necessarily because i noticed a massive improvement in performance because I didn't but because if your out and about and the thing gets clogged up it's an easy item to fix up.

It does let the engine breath a bit easier but the improvement on the diesel isn't earth shatttering.

As said in the other thread earlier today .. have a few K&N and Uni filters for the GQ, they did NOTHING... Both the precleaner and the main.... tried all combos with genuine and Foam, and gave up - I must admit they were all given to me by others who tried them and gave up...

I run genuine nissan ones again, and they work.

I run a foam Unifilter, couldn't tell you if there was a difference to performance as I've never noticed any either way, however the intake pipe is always spotless and it's easy to clean reguarly and costs me nothin versus the $95 toyota want to charge me for theirs.
I reckon their good, others will disagree, but I'm happy.
You just got to keep an eye on them, make sure they are cleaned after dusty trips etc, if the vehicle is not being used much ensure you rotate them to let the oil stay even etc etc. Basically just read the instructions that come with them.

GU 4.2 has a puny air box with tiny filter.

This leads to two things;
1. filter gets dirty quickly (rather change to filthy)
2. reduced air flow.

Foam type air filters are not a good thing on turbo vehicles, cause the turbo can suck a lot harder than an NA engine and may suck dirt around the filter edges if your not careful.

For a filter to flow more air it must either be more open in filter design (ie bigger holes for the air to go thru), or have more pleats (= greater surface area within reason).

Why dont you dump the std plastic jobby in the cr, and get a large metal air box that can hold a decent size filter. Consider a Donaldson filter assy, or drop in an airfilter box from a Toyota Landcruiser if cosnetics are important.

I've removed the after market 'performance' filter from my car and gone back to the factory filter after finding dust in the induction system :-((

I wonder what earth moving equipment use for air filtration?? Could it be paper filters in the CAT & Cummins engines???
