Suitability as a tow vehicle

I have recently purchased a new 6.65m Jayco caravan that has a maximum weight of 2300kg. I would like to hear feedback from anyone who has pulled this weight with a Falcon.

It would be dangerous, I don't know the weight of the current Falcon but I would say it would not be above 2000kgs, if that is the case it would also be illegal.
The law says that the weight of the trailer cannot be grater than the laden weight of the towing vehicle.

No longer necessarily true but is still a good rule of thumb. That used to be the law - most states will now state that the trailer weight not to exceed manufacturers specifications as listed in the handbook.

In falcon's case - I suspect the caravan would be too heavy.

The Falcon is rated to 2300kg on the button, as long as it's fitted with a Ford approved load distribution hitch... Having said that, I wouldn't go there. Towed my Father inlaws 16 footer @1600kg with our falcon, with the load dist. hitch, tail wagged the dog most of the way to Mt Beauty. On the way home there was no wind and very few trucks, trip was much more comfortable but my confidence had faded on the way up...

I haven't personally towed with this combination, but I have seen plenty of examples, some dangerous and some not. If all the towing gear is within the range of the weight of the van, then it's just a matter of getting everything right, such as the loading of the van, towball weight, a weight distribution hitch etc. You'll definately need at least a HR 250kg weight distribution hitch; anything less would be compromising the stability of the rig. I base this on the fact that, fully laden, your van should have about 230kg on the towball. This weight will lift some weight off the front axle of the car. A WD hitch will allow you to shift most of the towball weight back on to the front wheels. It's worth the effort to get the rig setup correctly as it will be easier and safer to tow, with less stress for everyone.

Hope this doesn't sound condescending or anything...

Wife's EL Falcon book says 2300lg with a towbar pack rated to 2300kg and load distribution hitch. Max 230kg onto towball. Even unladen you would not be able to tow above 80kph I would think (towball weight).

I used to tow a Millard around 22ft with a Ford 250 and kept the speed between 85 to 95 kph and would not feel safe towing the same load with a lighter, less powerful vehicle - no protection from Murphy's Law (such as when big trucks motor past or when the van wheels unexpectedly hit a deep road edge).

I would prefer to see you with one of the larger 4X4s or a F250. If you are on the road a lot a 250 has the space to carry bulky items and has excellent clearance. Many sightseeing places you don't need a fourby, you just need clearance.

I personally would not tow anything over the weight of the tow vehicle. I had a 1900kg trailer 'dip' into one of those 'holes' in the road at about 100 kmh where the whole rig got a sway up - it really took some time to get the thing under control.
This was towing with a GXL 80 series cruiser - constant all wheel drive. The rear of the cruiser was being dragged across-ways and without the front wheels actually pulling along and thus out of danger, I hate to think what might have happened.
I have many thousands of kays experience towing and only had that occur once - but once is all it takes. I have had a flat on the trailer though, while interesting, it was not heart in the mouth stuff.
No way will I tow these weights without 4wd or AWD.

Having been an avid vanner for more than 20yrs and towed many vans horse floats and many other combinations I would not tow this van with your Falcon.

The Falcon is rated for 2300kg so thats it's max and your vans max is 2300kg so when fully loaded and it will be on an extended trip. Thus you have NO margin for error.

I respectfully suggest you Consider another horse.
