NSW RTA B-Bar Regs

Submitted: Sunday, Sep 04, 2005 at 01:05

Came across this URL today which shows the NSW regs re acceptable B-Bar design and accessory attachments

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/vehiclestandards/

After reading it a number of times I cannot see how driving lights situated on top of the Bar and on tabs behind is deemed not acceptable as reported previously by some members on this forum.

At the very best they would 'obscure' approx and area the size of a bread & butter plate, which not even a cat could hide behind.

The issue with the authorities seems to be based on the drivers vision being obscurred.

And this one says it all

Bit hard to argue with this one.

I'll just have to take my lumps if queried as to why I have my driving lights on top of the B-Bar.

Bugger!

I think you will find that there are seperate regs for the fitment of auxillary lights that come into play here, not just the ones for front bars. I researched this years ago and if I recall correctly the lights had to be a certain distance apart, you could only fit 2 max, they weren't allowed to be above the height of the standard headlights, wired into high beam plus a few other rules that I have forgotten.

Taking the above into account I reckon that many, many, many driving light installations are in fact not legal.

Yep! I reckon you are correct, as you will notice in the folllow up's I posted showing the Victorian Reg and explanatory note.

Its an alleged 'clear vision' obsession thing, not the 'dangerous protusion' provision, however a rule/law is a rule/law no matter how ridiculous.

End story being that my setup is illegal along umpteen dozen others.

Whatever, I have mine mounted in such a fashion that it is a simple 5 min exercise to remove if one is getting 'pressured' to do so.

Otherwise they stay on.

i had a talk with a sydney based highway patrol sgt.,the lights can't be more than 1.2m to the centre of the lights from ground level,no part of the light can protrude foward of any part of the bullbar including top rail of bar.

Toohey! you B a s t a r d.

I bet you are ROFLyourAO knowing full well that after you posted the above, I would be in an absolute frenzy, triping over myself to get to garage, find a tape and measure the ground to light centre distance.

Damn! 1260mm or 1.26m

I reckon I will just get the 'co-pilot' to move up and sit on the bar whilst its being measured. That should do the trick ( if I survive such a suggestion that is).

Anyway, they are the nice rounded IPF900's with no sharp 'harold scrubby' type injuring protuberances.

So I may get a bit of leeway. If not, as I said before its a relatively simple matter to remove them and replace them later on when safe to do so.

I have them mounted on removable bar so that the 'setup' is not disturbed. Two wing nuts, two plugs and thats it.

The wing nut bolts are 13mm and have padlocks through them to make it not so simple for 'light fingers'

Double b a s t a r d !

I knew exactly where to find the tape this time though. HaHaHaHa.

615mm would you believe (too good to be true)

Yeah! mine are on the top for air flow reasons as well.

And if necessary can be taken off.

Have to admit the Troopy is not used as a town driver.

Thats where Amerca's Finest comes into its own (JEEP KJ Diesel Cherokee)

Thanks for your time and trouble and if you pluck some other diamention/spec out of your proverbial, you can 'talk to the hand'. (LOL)
