Hilux towing ability

Submitted: Saturday, Jun 02, 2001 at 00:00

Brian

Ive got a 93 Hilux 4X4, 2.8l diesel. Were looking at getting an 11foot pop top caravan. Im happy to sit on 80km/h in fourth.

Is a 11 foot van too much for it to cope with? Id be interested to hear from those who have used a Hilux for towing.

Brian, I have an 89 2.8l diesel hilux, tow a Goldstream 10 camper with no trouble. Usually sit on about 100kmph. Get about 24 mpg while towing.

Brian, I am also trying to answer this question, as we are looking at buying a late model diesel hilux to tow a 1100 kg (loaded) camper trailer. How much does the caravan weigh (fully loaded), and do you intend to go off road with it?

If you are getting a late model (3.0 turbo) Hilux you wont have any problems towing- I understand the 3.0 is a completely revised engine over the old 2.8 and is much more powerful. We just returned from a trip where I saw many late model Hilux's towing campers and vans without problem.
I'm looking at a 14foot poptop- I just don't see anyone around with cars of our vintage towing.
