Hi Michelle, can I ask you a quick question about your Camprite? we pick ours up on Saturday....
I was reading the thread on stones kicking up from behind camper trailers, and wondered how bad this is with the Camprite? have you needed to make any modifications such as people suggest using the shade cloth as a deflector?

We are using a 100 series Landcruiser, which has two spares on the back, so the back windows should be fauirly well protected. Maybe we'll just do cardboard on the back windows on stony sections?

Also, have you carried bikes with your rig? We are hoping to take 3 bikes and at this stage I think we'll need to use a bike carrier where one of the spare tyres is at present on the back of the Landcruiser....what do you thhink?

I'm sure I've seen you round - does your car have an ExplorOz spare tyre cover???

Cheers

Hi Liz,

I'm not a Michelle, but I do have a Camprite and an EO spare tyre over; and you may be looking for Melissa and not Michelle.

The camprite comes with a mesh stone deflector that works fine, no need to worry about cardboard; you only need to worry about boofheads coming at you who don't know how to slow down on dirt roads.

For the bike carrier have a chat to Reg at Camprite and he'll send you pic of what someone else has done.

Thanks lyds, yes I did mean melissa, but I'm glad you have answered.

I think I'm at the stage where we've spent too many hours on the internet reading up on all sorts of things, and it's hard to know what to not worry about. I'm glad that stones and the Camprite are not an issue, great to hear.

we are really excited about getting out Camprite on Saturday, we have been lucky enough to buy a new one. I've had a quick chat about bikes with Reg, but will go over it again on Saturday. However it looks for us as if bikes will work best hanfing off the swingaway spare wheel carrier on the back of the car.

Anyway, see you round.

This time in 4 weeks will be our fi8rst night out on the road!

Hello DB

We have a Camprite too, and you won't regret your choice!

BUT we did end up replacing our rear window courtesy of a stone rebound. Probably was partly our fault...was flogging along the Strez toward Leigh Creek, late in the day, wanted to arrive before dark, pushed the loud pedal a little bit louder... All the things one shouldn't do!... and whammo. Stone half the size of my fist, straight through the rear window and sitting neatly atop the Engel looking at me.

Result: a very pleasant stay near Leigh Creek, a wait of four days for a new screen to arrive, $750 removed from the wallet. On the bright side, we had a good look around the coal mine and the area, and really enjoyed the enforced break!

On the interesting side, if there were a lot of such stone rebounds you would expct the rear of the car to show some signs of damage - at least partly - of a "sand blasted" effect. There are and were no such signs! So I assume that the Camprite's stone guard does its job most of the time... But the stone guard has brackets to hold it up, and if a rock hits the bracket at just the right speed and angle, Bam.

Oh - towing vehicle was a Disco TDi.

Use the cardboard and go easy on the loud pedal. I learned the hard way.

cheers

Rob
