Gday, My Hilux when pulling off makes a ting sound, its heard as soon as you let off the clutch in normally reverse, 1st and 2nd and makes a metalic ting noise. Its been to dealers they greased the driveshaft etc up and it was gone for a day and then back again. They said everything is okay, just maybe some backlash in the diff. Bull!!!

Last night I spoke to the guy I bought my previous hilux from and he said it had the same problem when he bought it, he also said his new KZTE was starting to do the same thing. Apparently Toyota did some mod on the DS? I drove his KZ and it was doing the same. Has anyone expierenced this?

Does anyone know what this mod is? Or is it just the UJ or something?

Sounds like take up of slack in drive shaft. I have had it on a couple of vehicles (not Hi-Lux). Altering universals will not fix it as it is between teeth in the diff that is causing the slack. Try turning the radio up louder :-))

HI
Had similar problem, it sounded like a uni joint, so I changed them , and the noise was still there.

It end up being the nut that holds the flange on the spline out of the gearbox for the tailshaft was slightly loose.

From memory I stuck it in top gear with motor OFF, and used an 18 inch strong arm and socket, and a bit of attitude to tighten the nut about 1/8th of a turn and then repeened the the nut to prevent it from backing off again.

Ting is now gone

It might pay to drop the tailshaft and check to see if either that nut or the pinion nut is a bit loose. ( Be a bit carefull swing off the pinion nut )

Remember to mark your tailshaft before you remove it so it goes back in the same way it came out.

HTH
Cheers

Nebster, did that ting noise on your come and go? Just sent it in for new Uj's, centre bearing etc. Hope it does the trick! Suspected the UJ as when they grease it up it goes away for a while, after some water wading a while ago it was ting'ing constantly until greased up.

Will report back when I get her.

Thanks

Hi Bryan,

It did what yours does.
First in the morning when I reversed, it would ting, then when I drove forward it would tink, and speraticlly during the course of driving.

When I fist first changed the unis I thought I had fixed it, then a day or 2 later it was back again.

It didnt do it all the time, but enough to annoy.

It may be the centre bearing, as it to has a spline too i think.

But if I were a gambler, my money would be on that flange nut.

A mate of mine whos a mechanic, says its a more common problem than most think. But if the people want new unis and centre bearings then thats what they get. ( The customer is always right )

You never know, they might tighten up the nut while they are changing the centre bearing.

Just check to make sure they put a new centre bearing in ;D

Cheers

Thanks very much, got her back and no noise yet but i'm sure its going to come back. Will go back to the dealers after the trail this weekend and give them the info and let them do it.

Also got this info from another forum.

"Inside the flange that holds the center bearing on the rear propshaft there is splines, remove the flange, put some locktite on the splines and thread and retorque the nut to 240nm, this should solve it.
NB: Mark the propshaft and flange position before dismantling to retain balance."

Will let them tighten both the bolts.

Thanks again

I have exactly the same problem - and have been through the whole process of uni joint replacement and CBJ replacement. Sounds like quite a common problem! - I will be giving the nut tightening theory a go though!
