just got back from crossing the simpson with my hilux a mates bravo and seven VW kombis. having never been before and been told how hard it is i thought this will be interesting. all made it across and 4 made it up big red. we seen 4wds having 4 and 5 goes at dunes that the kombis went straight up what a joke. some people just have no idea about tyre pressure. but it was a fantastic adventure one i will do again

Not ever having the pleasure yet of crossing the Simpson, or seeing Big Red, I cannot comment, except to say that Kombi's & Beetle's are very good at some dirt work. I've owned one of each.
I cut my beetle in half, and discarded the rear half, and made a tray top for it. Big weapon Sunrasias, and wound the torsion bars up all the way. It went through a lot of spots, as long as I had momentum.
Do you have any photos? That would be way cool!
Good work

We saw you guys east of purnie
bore, and have been wondering how it went. I think they were going across on the
Rig road. We had a laugh when, obviously seeing the look on our faces, one of the Combi drivers piped up on the channel we were on, saying, "yes, we are mad!"
Our party chatted for ages about the fun you guys would have, so I'm glad you did. I'd love to see some photos!

When I went across in early July, I saw a 4WD bus halfway across on the French Line. Couldn't believe he managed it!! But the sand was damp which would have helped a lot.

Years ago (like 20 or more) I read a Wheels story about 2 Holden panelvans across the Simmo, 15" rears and so on, they made it across so Kombi's even better with the reduction drive rear ends. good clearance etc.
Also read about a Porsche Carrera 4wd also c rossed the Simmo, no tyre probs, support vehicles had flats not the Carrera. Great read.
Cant wait to see the pics, a Kombi on big red woohoo

Can't knock the "K" vans
I've had a few that we used for Fraser and Moreton for about 15 years.
Set up right they have incredible load carrying capacity for in the soft stuff. The only let down is their performance in reverse in the sand when they act like a front wheel drive.
I have no doubt they would conquer any desert in Aus.
