I have also gone through all the info and not so informative data on this site and others to determine what compressor to buy. I took a punt on a Grunter, and have added a 6m-coiled hose (removable connector).
Fittings are not STD size, but local bearing
shop had parts (country Vic).
This compressor is the same as Repco (on special for $99) with hose and bag.
Once you add the price of quality hose to Grunter, the price is close.
It does have a metal piston, and has worked well on my Coopers 235/85/R16's, taking 2 min to get from 20 psi to 35.
The air gauge on the Grunter is not reliable, always check with another.
