Evening all ,

I need to buy one of those fittings that slide into a Hayman Reece towbar - there are two kinds I have seen - one is solid and has a big shackle through it and the other is hollow square tube with a hook on it .

Firstly , which one do you think is the best and secondly who sells them ?

The only type I could find was the Kaymar one with a big eye in it .

Thanks a lot ,

Willie

$$$$$60 bucks!!! geez u got to be kidding. I don't know of anyone who has bent a pin in a hitch. If you ever did it may be a little pain in the ass to get the bent one out but a new pin cost less than $10 bucks!

Hi Willie,
I just use a spare Hayman Reece socket with a large bow shackle fitted to it. Works a treat, just had to enlarge the hole in the tongue for the shackle bolt.

Evening Willie,
I would go for which ever one is rated for what you want to do with it,I think I've seen them advertised here thru one of the advertisers.

I've got the solid one with the shackle and it is good. I would have bought the one with the hook though if they'd been is stock when I got mine. The less shackles the better IMO

g'day Willie,

i'd go the solid billet (well it's what i decided on) as it gives best support for the pin, although the reports of them being bent are scarce, i have heard of it happening. Can't imagine much of a price difference but give Nick a call at Mannell Motors up the highway. expect to pay around $60. Hitch Receiver jobbie. Shackle attached should be 4.7T.

cheers,

Jeremy.

I got one with the hook - if you need to use it just put the loop of the snatch strap on the hook in 1 sec and ready to go... The are made by Outback Ideas.

Got mine frm 4wd Megastore in Ballarat. They had both hook type and shackle version. I went for the hook and have had no problems. Manufactured by Outback Ideas called the Bush Hook and rated at 10000lbs(approx. 4.5t)

Willie,
Save your $65 and just buy another hitch pin, put the eye of your snatch strap straight into this.

I agree with rolande.

Take the tounge out - ball and all, and slide the snatch in there, put pin through the lot, and R clip back on the end.

Thats all I use, worked 100's of times, including driver training for the club.

YMMV

Yeah right !!

Try puting a snatch strap up the spout, putting the pin in and then putting the'R' clip back on the pin under muddy water, in a river, deep in mud (where you can't see the reciever) or on a dark wet night !

Go for the hook version. Go to any welder / engineering shop and they will cut and drill a bit of 50 x 50 x 6mm square section tube in a few minutes. Get a rated hook and mount it yourself. Make sure that the first bolt hole for the hook is about 50 mm back from the end of the tube.

you obviously dont live in Victoria where they are standard conditions.

Also if your going thru slimey mud pits, you would attach the snatch prior to going through.

YMMV

Thanks to everyone for contributing to this post . I am off to Mannell Motors to look at what they have got and I am going to have a look at the "Outback Ideas" website .
The one on Ebay had already been sold , but it was the Kaymar one with the ring which I did not reaaly like .
I have heard many arguements regarding just using the pin - for and against and as I am no expert, I will steer clear of doing this , but thanks for the tip anyway .
Cheers ,
Willie .

Well I went up to Mannell Motors and they had the the Outback Ideas hook and the solid bar with the shackle .
I had the solid one before ( I had it pinched ) so I thought I would try the 10,000 lb hook type .
I took it home , put it on and found that it stuck out too far . I would have been belting my shins on it all the time .
So back I went and swapped it for the solid one - they were the same price . Took it home , tried to put it on and the pin would not go into the solid bar . Back to Mannell and they drilled it out for me .
They are very nice people . While I was there , I bought two Outback Ideas recovery eyes made for the front of the 100 . They put them on charge for me , as I could not get the bolts undone .
Cheers ,
Willie .
