Shockies for a GQ - Koni or Bilsteins??

for what it's worth I believe that thelatest edition of 4x4 Australia has a review of all the leading brands of shocks. I haven't seen the mag yet as it gets delivered to subscribers first. Won't hit the newsagents for a week or so. A mate gave me a review over the phone today and the OME shocks didn't come up to well. Bilsteins - glowing report. Having just fitted an ironman suspension system, I'm keen for a read myself. Might be worth the 6 bucks.

My Konis are member Roachies old ones off hiss GU. I had them rebuilt by Top Performance in Vic(just posted them). So far can't be faulted. They are adjustable and the fact u can rebuild them is a plus.

Both Koni and Bilstein are excellent shocks and I've used them both on various vehicles over the years. They are costly but are definitely a quality item. Koni are primarily a rebound shock which work well when you have a lot of unsprung weight such as live axles. They are adjustable (manually) so you can tune them to your set-up. The Bilstein are a monotube design which will not suffer well if stone dented. If you choose them then make sure the rear ones in particular are well protected. The Bilstein have a speed sensitive variable valving system which works really well with IFS. IMHO the Koni are the choice for your GQ, I've got them on my GU set one 1/2 turn from full soft on the front and 1 full turn from full soft on the rear with Kings HD progressive rate springs. Warranty support is good too if required.

How did the OME shocks perform - how long have they lasted?

My experience going down the Canning with a club group-
Konis eye broke off.
Ironman-seized up and others leaking.
Ome- no problems at all.

I would put Bilsteins on a road car any day but not on a 4x4. Mono tube shocks are just not suited to Oz conditions - if you dent them they are stuffed and they run high pressure gas so in the desert they can actually heat up so much they go solid open at full travel.
