Melbourne City Link - Navarra Rates

City link are wanting to charge me 'light commercial ' rates for my new dual cab Navara ST-X. Any one any experience of rates for dual cabs vs cab chasis?

I lived in Melbourne a few years ago and had a Courier Dual Cab 4WD at the time. When I rang to add it to the e tag account, they tried the same thing. I let it slide and rang back later and called it a Ford Utility (rather than a Courier 4WD).

Got charged normal car rates and never had a problem.

The person you are dealing with probably doesn't know one car from another. The just punch key word in the computer and real what is on the screen.

Norm, I tried that line until one day they caught up with me... I argued black & blue that I could understand if I was a trady and could claim it as an expense but they were'nt interested... I even argued that some 4wd's out there have a far greater GVM than my ute, still not interested. In their vehicle classifications they class any "cab-chassis" vehicle with a GVM between 1.5t and 4.5t as "light-commercial".

Not a lot you can do about it...

I tried that with my Rodeo!
Called it a holden ute (hoping for Commodore ute rates!)

Her: "What model holden ute?"

Me: Ummm....model? Ummm holden??!! ;-)

Her: Yeah! Is it a Commodore....? Rodeo?

Ummm???? Holden, I think? I dunno!!! Just a half a car looking thing, with a chopped off back! :))

In the end........No Dice :(
Gotta pay full whack! Just like the 4 tonners do :((

I should have tried Jackaroo or Frontera!.... 4WD...I dunno it says 4WD :D

I haven't an etag but purchase the occasional 24hr pass on the web for when I have the misfortune of travelling through Melb. I have only paid car rates. My dual cab isn't a commercial vehicle.

About 12 months ago we went through Melbourne too, although our experience wasn't for a dual cab. We have a Mitsubishi Canter 4WD with a camper built on the back. It is registered here in W.A. as a 'motorised caravan'. We had to pay commercial rates because of the weight of the vehicle, but what got us was that a vehicle towing a caravan was charged at car rates with the caravan free. It is a good money raiser for Melbourne. Had we not been going through there in peak hour we probably would have found some way round and saved ourselves something like $15 toll. We had more success on the toll ways in Sydney getting the vehicle through as a private vehicle as opposed to a commercial vehicle. Good luck in your endeavours to get your vehicle at car rates. Prue

We went to a wedding in Melbourne in December and did that. It took us about 30 minutes longer than going down the toll way and we drove through some nice suburbs. We only had the RACV Greater Melbourne map with the major roads marked too.

Melbourne suburbs are not that pretty, and you would easily cop a hefty traffic fine if you missed one of the 40k limits that are everywhere, not to mention the congestion.

I hate the tolls too, but if my trip cost me $4000 rather than $4015 I doubt that it would stick in my mind.

I'd probably miss a meal to recover the $15.00 cause I'm guilty of consuming too much food like the rest of us!!

Just came back from Sydney. Well after one day on their toll roads I was $30 poorer, they go on vehicle lenght, anything over 2 metres is considered commercial. I loved the sign that said a car and trailer under 2 metres was only charged car rate, still trying to think of a car and trailer combo under 2 metres in lenght

Bloody hope not! A commodore sedan is 4.8mt long!!

Only thing I can think of that comes in under 2 mt is a motor scooter. Even most motor bikes are over 2 metres long............

How many trips for $30? Was that a return trip on one toll road?

We were planning to use the M7 to transit Sydney on our way to Qld but if it costs us $15 one way I think I'll traffic jam in the suburbs instead.

If you are going to the best caravan park in Sydney, at North Ryde, plan to take the M7 / M2 and exit at Delhi Road and you only have 1 km to the park. You won't know how bad Sydney traffic is till you take the bus next morning to the station.

I recall a few years back travelling along the Melbourne tollway with SWMBO sitting up purse in hand ready to pay toll... we never heard anything about it. Tried to get an epass for the M7 and what an excercise was on the phone for 15 mins at $1 a minute gave all the details and did the trip but have not had a bill yet... Going to buy an Etag though with a couple of brackets as I'm always in Sydney & the M7 goes exactly where I want to go...
