John L G,
PLEASE PLEASE don't run a
fridge of the centre tap of a 24v system to get 12v without making other alterations. i.e. It is not correct to say "so stealing the 12V from one of the batteries should not pose a problem".
It WILL create problems, unless the battery voltages are equalised. Redarc sell a device to do this. If the level of charge in each battery is not balanced by an external device, the batteries do not do this all alone - unlike when they are in parallel. One battery will be overcharged and die of being boiled dry, the other battery will die because it is undercharged.
The other alternative is run 12v items via a 24v/12v reducer, but draw is limited by the devices capacity, unlike the balancing device that allows high current draw which is then balance back over time.
There are many comments on this in other threads for more details.
