Nissan Patrol 4.2 Turbo diesel

Submitted: Saturday, Jul 14, 2001 at 00:00

Simon

I have a 2000 model Patrol with 4.2 turbo diesel engine done 20,000 klms. When the car has been standing for some time(a few hours) it takes 5-6 seconds for the oil pressure warning light to go out. I have put a master guage on it and it takes that long for the pressure to come up, so it is not the sender unit playing up. Nissan tell me not to be concerned and that with some cars it can take anything up to 10 seconds for oil pressure to come up. I am not happy with this. Does anyone have any similar experience?

Simon, I have a 2000 Jackaroo TDI that shows little oil pressure at the best of times. It's done about 20,000km also - I am running 10/40w Castrol GTX Magnatec, a low viscosity oil with synthetic properties. Early 98 Jackaroos had a cold start problem due to the viscosity of the oil running through the HUE injection system - hence the recommendation to move to the Magnatec. I am putting my low oil pressure issue down to the oil, but I guess I should check with the Technical Assistance Division at Holden. Good luck resolving your problem.

Simon,
I have a 4.2 turbodiesel Patrol myself and the problem is not the oil, the problem is the return valve inside the oil filter, my Patrol has now 75000km and it depends on the oil filters is how fast the light goes out, the 4.2 has two big oil filters and when it stands still (ig the filters empty) due to a leaking internal valve which is supposed to be non return, it takes a while for the oil to fill them up and build up pressure. Nissan Claims no problems but I will start using good quality aftermarket filters soon. The problem is finding an aftermarket secondary filter. Unlike the GQ the GU has a main filter and a secondary (non full flow filter). So far I haven't been able to find an aftermarket aux filter.
With good filters the oil light goes out straight away (I tried it and tested it).

The oil filters for this vehicle are Z503 and Z502
in RYCO. I have owned 2 4.2 litre diesels the latest one being the same as your current vehicle and they have both done exactly the same thing.
My first one had done 380,000km when I traded it, without a problem.

Simon, My LC80 series desiel takes about 5 seconds to build up oil pressure after standing overnight. Toyota says this is normal and within specs. The brand of oil filter doesn't make any difference with mine. I've tried genuine Toyota, Ryco, Valvaline and others. No difference. Just don't rev the engine until the oil light goes out.

Simon, I have a Nissan GQ with 230,000 K'S, the only time I have ever touched the motor was at 150,000 to refurbish injectors and check tappets, and change the oil every 10,000 k's. The oil pressure, or gauge I don't know which has always taken time to build up. The old girl is still going strong. Edwin
