USB / Serial Adaptor Cable for Emap to Laptop

Hi All, recently upgraded thr computer to a laptop and to my dismay discovered yesterday that I need a USB to Serial adaptor to connect the Emap. I have read the recent post regarding Com ports and have found an adaptor at the GPS Oz site for $72. Has anyone else found an adaptor cheaper than this that they can recommend?

This is a serial to USB cable, how much did you pay for the e-map to serial cable?

Chris, thanks for the info - don't know exactly how much the original cable was as I bought it as part of a package from Johnny Appleseed. I do know that their list prices are for genuine Garmin cables, and that the GPS Oz site has non-genuine cables at greatly reduced prices.

Contacted Harvey Norman, Harris Technology, b2bdiscounts - all carry the Taurus adaptor for around the $40- $50 mark. Unfortunately none in stock anywhere - managed to pick one up for $69 from Dick Smith. Thanks for the b2bdiscount info - will keep them in mind for future requirements as their pricing is great.

Yep, I got caught the same way. I rdered a new Notebookover the internet stipulating that I needed a serial port but when it arrived there was no serial port for my GPS. Bought a Serial Port to USB from Jaycar Electronics for $80. It works well. You can buy these units for around $30 but I opted for the more expensive one on advice from my tech. You pay peanuts, you get monkeys :-) Cheers,W

Hi Moggs, No there was not any specifics that the tech talked about other than if you pay more you get a better quality item. I run Windows 98 on my Notebook and bought a USB 232 Converter which is compatible with Win 98, Win 2K and Win ME. It does the job. I am very much a novice with these technical items and only use them for basic functions. Cheers, W
