Niffty

I have been chasing 2B&S cable and prices have been between $9.50-$11.00 P/Meter. Does anybody know of a cheaper supplier?
I have thought of using welding lead wire as some of my battery leads are made from the stuff but cant find the amp rating on the insulation.Any leads on these products in Perth.

You are actually better off running two 4Ga wires beside each other, rather than one 2Ga, based on Jaycar prices.

2Ga -
$12.95 per metre. 160amp 7 milliohms

Two x 4Ga
$11.90 per metre. 220 amp 5 milliohms

Hi Mike I think we are talking about different cable here. 2B&S is battery and starter cable rated @225 amps and 32.5mm2.Not 2 GA.
Thanks Niffty

There are only two wire gauges used in Australia - American and British

AWG- started off as Brown and Sharpe (B&S) and then changed to AWG when it became the official American Standard.

"B&S=Battery and Starter" is something that Bias Boating seem to have invented. 30B&S (0.25mm) wire is hardly useful for starting !

The Europeans were smart enough to describe wire size using Square MM - e.g. House Power wiring is 2.5 sq mm and is rtaed at 15 amps.

Here are two examples for local 4 AWG cables
Altronics - 110 amps @ 110deg 10.2mm Total OD 18.8 sq mm
Jaycar - 110 amps 10mm Total OD

I bought some last week from Battery World. I got 15m black and 15m red, and asked for a good price for what was equivalent to a full reel length. Half the price you have been quoted, and they had to get it in specially.

Incidentally, they gave me a real good price on Fullriver AGMs as well - lower than I've seen on any internet site. Their preferred brand is Remco(?) but again they got 'em in for me. First time I've done business with them but it won't be the last.

I won't mention the store location here in case they made some blue with pricing and are embarrased - pm me if you want the actual store details - but they're not in Perth.

Hi Niffty,
Couple of suggestions from a different angle.
Look in the local phone book for companies such as,
Bambach Cables,
Olex Cables,
CMA or Cable Makers Australia,
Pirelli Cables.

Even if you've got a mate who's an electrician. We can very often get better deals on 25 or 35 sq mm double insulated welding cable.
Advantage is the welding cable is double insulated for better protection where as B&S cable is usually only single insulated.

Geoff.

I used the 35mm² welding cable on my ute as the run was down to the tray at the back I wanted it as thick as possible, wonderful stuff.

You're so right Mad Dog,
Welding cable is good stuff for low voltage applications.
Hell, it's almost but not quite Boilermaker proof.

Note the bit of inter trade bagging!!
