Cetane rating

A while back I asked my mechanic if he had done anything different as I 'felt' that the motor was running smoother than usual.

Nothing specific, just one of those vague feelings. Anyway he hadn't.

A few weeks later I filled up with Caltex, not the usual Gull, and driving along I thought that the motor sounded rougher. I didn't think anything of it, just made a mental note.

Next tank full, of Gull this time, and lo and behold I again thought things were smoother. Thats when I remembered the Thread on Cetane ratings.

Was it my imagination?

Does anyone know if Gull, sourced from BP, has a higher rating than Caltex?

Banjo,

I'm almost certain that Gull servos are supplied by Coogee Chemicals tank farm in Kwinana - right next door to BP Refinery.

Most of Coogee's stuff comes from Singapore. Which means it point of original manufacture could be anywhere in the world.

All fuels are made or imported to an Australian Standard specification - but some JUST meet the standard and others beat it by miles. That's called "Product Giveaway" and was avoided at all costs when I was making the stuff at BP Kwinana

There is a minimum cetane rating for diesel for Australian market, I looked into this a while ago.

I cant remember the exact figures. However I can tell you this much:-

All diesel has to meet it and most do just that, with the exception of shell, which exceeds it by a few points.

From this if you are basing it on cetane rating alone that would make Shell the top choice.

If you do some digging on the net under cetane ratings / shell you will be able to confirm this easily.

I find mine runs pretty sweet on Shell although dont always buy it.

Hope this helps
