Iridium is the best option for satphones - no idea where you can hire them as I'm a HF user.
I'd also recommend buying or hiring a personal
EPIRB - they are inexpensive compared to your life and are good backup for life threatening emergencies, in case your primary long range comms fails for any reason.
Also a UHF is always good value when travelling. One that scans is good in the bush as there isn't much traffic, and scanning can provide anything from early warning of problems, to local type info and even entertainment (some people have the weirdest conversations). I prefer GME radios and I've tried them all (we currently own 6 UHFs and 4 of those are GME's).
